Not your Grandmother’s Wallpaper

I’m sure you’ve seen it by now. Wallpaper has made a huge comeback in the past couple years and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping soon. So, where did this cult following arise from? And why now? Believe it or not, wallpaper has been around since the late 1700’s when Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf invented the first machine for printing colored tints on paper. Fast forward to the 1900’s and I would bet that more than half of us have great memories of eating in kitchens adorned with colorful flowers and fruit baskets from floor to ceiling.

Just like the clothes and hairstyles of that era, the wallpaper has also changed. Many of us may think that it took a departure for a while and is all of the sudden now in fashion again like denim overalls or neon colored high socks. Has anyone else noticed those!? When really, wallpaper never left us. It has been here this whole time just clinging on in hotels, hospitals, restaurants and other posh places without even a second glance. Sure, it may not have been the border of assorted sports equipment that caught our eye in 1990, but it has been here all the same. So what’s different about it now? With rising knowledge about interior surfaces from HGTV, the DIY network and Pinterest just to name a few; the general population has never had so much to look at! Design follows fashion and just like those neon socks we talked about, the possibilities are now endless. Suppliers have never stopped making our age-old friend, it’s just gotten a little Botox and a color job so now we take notice!

Wallpaper or “wall-coverings” as we like to say in the industry, are an inexpensive way to add some serious high style and pop to any space. For Heaven’s sake they even make it in peel and stick vinyl now! So which room are you going to give a face-lift?
